Six new wine releases at Clover Hill this summer

Our Winemaker John Skrip III has been busy and is excited to share six new Clover Hill wines with you. 2015 was a kind vintage to our red wines. We had great quality with our red grape varieties, but the trade off is we have very little yield. That means all of the 2015 vintages listed below are in limited supply. Taste them while you can! Tasting is complimentary for these wines at all Clover Hill locations.

  • 2015 Dolcetto: a dry rosé that is light, fresh, and fruity with a green apple finish. This release of Dolcetto has just a slight bit of fizz. $13.99
  • 2015 Sangiovese: a medium bodied dry red wine. Sangiovese shows rich flavors of black cherry and ripe plum with toasty American (PA) oak undertones. $16.99
  • 2015 Pinot Noir: This vintage of Pinot a bit fuller bodied than previous years and it is truly a superstar! The wine is full of classic strawberry characteristics and soft oak notes. $16.99
  • 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon: This Cabernet is packed with rich oak flavors of vanilla and spice from French oak aging and ripe fruit flavors of raspberry, blackberry and cherry. $17.99
These two wines are limited release and are available for sale at all locations while supplies last, but ONLY available for tasting at the Winery in Breinigsville on a regular basis. Due to the very limited nature of these wines, there are tasting fees.
  • Sparkling Vidal Blanc: Welcome Clover Hill's newest sparkling wine. This bubbly is made from 100% Vidal Blanc with crisp flavors of lemon and grapefruit with soft, yeasty undertones. $16.99/bottle; $3 for a 1oz tasting fee
  • 2016 Vidal Ice Wine: Our Ice Wine is back! This Ice Wine was hand harvested in January 2016. The berries were dehydrated, frozen solid and rich in flavor and sweetness. The harvest was basket pressed and yielded 1,500 bottles of Vidal Ice Wine; or as we like to call it...liquid gold. The flavors are complex and rich including honeycomb, orange blossom and bright acidity. $32/bottle (187ml); $6 for a 1oz tasting fee

Vynecrest winemaker's thoughts on all that goes into making a great red wine

August is a great time of year to come out, taste some wine, and enjoy the view of the vineyard. The grapes are just about ready to go through veraison, where they stop growing and start ripening. The red grapes will turn from green to red and the sugar levels start to rise. This change in color is also a signal for the birds the grapes are about ready to eat.

Just a reminder, the Vyneskeller is open seven days a week. So after you are done tasting you can grab a glass of wine and relax downstairs.

August Specials:
* Wine of the Month - Vynecrest Red - additional 10% off
* 3 Pack of the Month - 3 Bear Naked Chardonnay for $35

*available at the winery only

Aug 30 - Vineyard & Winery Tour, and Jazz Sunday

Vineyard and winery tour begins at noon. $5 per person. Tour should wrap up just in time to enjoy some live Jazz music in the Vyneskeller from 1 - 4 pm.

Glass Half Empty
by Malachi Duffy (left, pictured with Sam Landis)

When I have a glass of Lemberger I think about what went into making the wine that is in that bottle. Arguments over what to plant 4, 5, 6 years or more earlier. Remembering in 2008 we seriously considered ripping all of it out and not making it any more (thank goodness we didn’t follow through with that idea!). Wondering if the vines were going to make it through the sub-zero temps of the winter. Watching bud break and deciding how many clusters to keep. The awesome crew of guys in the vineyard who handle pruning, hedging, picking and everything in between. Prior to harvest, putting together the order for what yeast to use, enzyme and tannin additions, whether to cold soak or not. Tasting Lemberger on the vine when it gets close to harvest time. Arguing (again) over when to pick each lot of Lemberger. Finally picking and fermenting it.

Sam Landis and I having sand wedge contests over who can chip a golf ball into the fermenting red wine (the loser had to punch the caps). Sam punching the caps. Pressing the almost-dry wine and tasting the wine that runs out of the press as it is being crushed. Letting the wine sit for a few months before we put it on oak. Inevitably thinking that I have completely screwed up this vintage and I should have stuck with what I did last year. The following day retasting and not being so scared.

Oak additions to the wine a couple of months later: Some went to oak barrels, some went to Flex Tanks with oak staves and some with oak chips. At the end of the day (sometimes in the middle of the day) pulling samples and making sure everything is “progressing as it should.” That wonderful day when we have to come up with the final blend for Lemberger. Hopefully bottling before the current year runs out so we don’t have empty shelves. Grabbing a bottle as I head out the door to enjoy during dinner with the family.

It’s awesome to have a story about the drink you have in front of you. I am lucky enough to be involved in the process of producing that bottle. But hopefully you also have a story about Vynecrest wine. Maybe you had a great time in the Vyneskeller with friends and family, or you had Vynecrest wine at someone’s wedding. That’s the great thing about local wine, you don’t just go pick it up at the store, there is an experience associated with it. The wines are great by themselves (hopefully) but you can’t buy the moments off the shelf. The moments are what make that wine taste even better.

So, cheers to all the moments!

Behind the Vine

Lots of people who come to visit us ask what we do all year while the grapes grow? Vineyards require tons of attention and lots of work year around.

Right now our vines are growing like crazy, thankfully. We have 1, 2 and 3 year old vines that require a lot of training. Grapes would love to grow like a bush so to make them grow tall we have to train them by tying them up the poles and across the poles as they grow.

We're also cluster thinning which means we remove some of the clusters to create space between the other clusters allowing them to grow. This gives us the best fruit possible. All in all this season is going really well for us and 2015 has potential to be another amazing year at FHV.

We would like to thank everyone who has visited and shared our story.

In case you are out of the viewing area, Sharon Gaeta from our NBC affiliate WBRE in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton stopped by to chat with Sarah. View that story here. We also welcomed Mary E. Young from The Reading Eagle.  You can read her article here. Keep watching the news because in mid-September Jennifer Glose's article will appear in Lehigh Valley Business.

Sarah is ever so humble and always credits the entire crew at Galen Glen for her success. We, the staff, never stop being inspired by her and Galen, their tenacity, strong work ethic and passion for creating internationally award-winning wines.

Save the date for Blue Mountain's annual Picking Party and Grape Stomp event

News from the Vineyard

August is a very busy month in the vineyard. We have been hard at work spraying, tying and leaf pulling the vines. Due to the harsh winter and unusually cool spring our vines have suffered. In the spring we planted new vines for future harvests to replace ones that didn't survive the winter. There will definitely be less crop this year, but since there is less crop the quality should be very good.  Hopefully we will have very little crop loss from birds since our vines are netted. Wish us luck!

Clover Hill features Cayuga White as August Owner's Selection

Veraison ~ the final step of ripening in the vineyard and the precursor to grape harvest. The berries begin to change colors, skins and seeds soften, and sugars intensify. This marks an exciting change in the vineyards and another Clover Hill harvest is near. This is also a busy time of year preparing for harvest. In the vineyard, we are still summer pruning, pulling leaves, cluster thinning and maintaining the overall health of the vines and fruit. In the winery, we are busy bottling to make room for the incoming harvest. (Photo by Jim Gavenus)

This is a glorious time to visit Clover Hill Vineyards and Winery. Stop in for a tasting, sit on the patio and enjoy a glass of wine. We love having groups visit the winery, but please note that groups of 12 or more are by appointment only so we can best serve all of our visitors. To make an appointment for your group, please contact Tina at 610-395-2468 at least one week prior to your planned visit.

If you are looking for a unique way to experience local wineries we suggest Tastings and Tours - a local, family-owned and operated wine and brew tour business that offers one-of-a-kind, VIP tours in Lehigh and Berks County. They do the driving so you can sit back, relax and take in the scenery while sampling at wineries with no worries. Their special partnerships will provide you with guided, all-inclusive, private VIP tastings, tours and pairings not normally offered to the general public.

We look forward to your next visit to Clover Hill Vineyards and Winery. Thank you for choosing to enjoy our locally produced wines. Cheers!

Please note: If you are traveling to the winery in Breinigsville, Schantz Road will be partially closed until July 2015. For detour directions, go here.

Owner’s Selection - August
Cayuga White Save 10% on your bottle purchase and 20% when included in a case purchase.

A semi-sweet, unoaked, soft white wine with mellow aromas and flavors that will leave your mouth coated with tastes of ripe melon, mango, and ruby grapefruit. Pairs wonderfully with lighter fish dishes or John Jr.’s favorite shrimp and rice dish.
Now only $9.45.

Paint with wine at Vynecrest's Kutztown wine shoppe this month

August is a great time of year to come out, taste some wine, and enjoy the view of the vineyard. The grapes are just about ready to go through veraison, where they stop growing and start ripening. The red grapes will turn from green to red and the sugar levels start to rise. This change in color is also a signal for the birds the grapes are about ready to eat.

Just a reminder, the Vyneskeller is open seven days a week. After you are done tasting you can grab a glass of wine and relax downstairs.

For me, August is the one and only month that it feels you can take a breath and exhale. The 2013 vintage is put to rest and the 2014 vintage is a month away. August means vacation, fairs, corn on the cob and ice cold beer... and wine!

But its also a great time to step back and look at all that we did right in 2013 and all that we did wrong. Which is what I love most about the wine business. Every year you get a shot to do it all over again and August is a time to sit back reflect and start laying out the plan for September. We have a worthy opponent in Mother Nature... she never runs the same plays twice. 25 days and counting...

Pinnacle Ridge announces Blues in the Barn lineup and two new wine releases

We have recently released new vintages on some of our favorite wines. We are now pouring the crisp and refreshing 2013 Traminette as well as the 2013 Cayuga, always perfect for summertime sipping.

2013 Pinnacle Ridge Traminette:
This Gewürztraminer hybrid is a Silver Medal Winner at the Los Angelas International Wine Competition. This rather large wine begins with a big mouth feel, intense aromas of flowers and tropical fruits. This off-dry wine possesses hints of lychee and al balanced acidity that compliments the 1.3% residual sugar. This food-friendly wine pairs especially well with spicy foods like Indian and Thai cuisines.

2013 Pinnacle Ridge Cayuga:
The always popular summertime sipping wine in the signature blue bottle! This wine displays aromas of apples and honey on the nose that are followed by some wonderful floral flavors. This semi-sweet treat is the perfect compliment to summertime classics like hot dogs and baked beans or pork BBQ.

Open House Concert Series:
This month we will feature two bands here in the Barn for the first time, We are very excited to announce that The Wallace Brothers Band will be here on Saturday, August 9 from 2-5 pm. Chef Adam Gluskin will also provide some carne asada tacos for your enjoyment.

On Saturday, August 23 we will host The Big and Bad Rockabilly Cats from 2-5 pm in the barn. Come out and enjoy a great show and some of Chef Adam Gluskin's always-popular chicken kabobs with a cayenne yogurt sauce.

Blues in the Barn Weekend - will be Saturday and Sunday, September 6 and 7. This year's line-up will feature the James Supra Blues Band on Saturday, from noon - 3 pm. Later that day, Dugan Thomas will continue the show from 4-7 pm. We will also be featuring slow-cooked full pigs, compliments of Windy Acres BBQ from nearby Fleetwood, Pa. Blue Mountain Vineyards wraps up summer with festivals, Sangria Sundays and farmers markets

News from the vineyard

August is a very busy month in the vineyard. We have been hard at work spraying, tying and leaf pulling the vines. Also, due to the loss of crop the last three years we have decided to net our vines. It is a huge expense and a tremendous amount of labor, but it will make a huge difference in our yield, especially in the red grapes. The birds won't be happy but we will. Of course, we can not afford to net the entire 50 acres, so they may get some. Hopefully they don't develop a taste for white grapes!
