Get to know... Becky at Tolino Vineyards

1. Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

I have worked at Tolino Vineyards since 2012. I began working in the vineyard as a summer job and have worked in the tasting room for the past two years.

2. What is your favorite wine that your winery makes and why? What do you like to pair it with?

My favorite wine is the 2014 Lilly, which is a blend of our sweeter Vidal Blanc and drier Pinot Grigio. It is a light and refreshing wine which pairs perfectly with a variety of seafood.

3. What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

Customers commonly ask whether we grow our own grapes or add anything to our wines. Many customers read the description of the wines and assume that the notes are what we add to our wine. I explain that we grow our own grapes and that the notes describe the natural flavor of the grapes used to make that particular wine, which is weather dependent.

4. What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

The wineries are family oriented, which makes customers feel like family when they visit. Following the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail is also a great way to support local agriculture and as consumers, you know where your grapes are being grown to product the wine you are bringing home to share with your loved ones.

5. What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

Each winery offers a unique variety of wines, so it is important to have an open mind when wine tasting since you never know what you might enjoy.

Get to know... Cheryl Paynter of Franklin Hill Vineyards

1. Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

I've been coming to Franklin Hill since high school, although at that time it had nothing to do with wine and was to visit my friend Adam. I've been lucky enough to work at FHV full time for about seven years.

2. What is your favorite wine that your winery makes, and why? What do you like to pair it with?

When I first started to drink wine Catawba was my favorite. But these days our Seyval Blanc is just beautiful. I enjoy a glass with a ton of vegetarian dishes that I like to prepare. It also pairs perfectly with a book and a blanket at the end of a long day.

3.  What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

The most common question I get asked about the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail is which winery is my favorite and I tell them, well FHV of course! But they're all amazing and have their own way of standing out.

4. What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

Lehigh Valley wineries work together yet maintain their individuality. We create wines using the same grapes but each one is unique from one another. For example each one of us has a Chambourcin wine, but boy are they different! It's amazing and interesting for our customers.

5. What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

If you're traveling the wine trail my first piece of advice is to please have designated drivers. Our wineries are quite far apart and some are on remote, back roads. Before anything is the safety of our customers.

Second would be to come early. We at FHV get very busy during the afternoon so the closer to opening time you can arrange your visit, the better. We love what we do and we love to show it off, so if you come early, we can almost always guarantee we'll be able to show you around.

Get to know... Bonnie Pysher of Franklin Hill Vineyards

Our new blog series introducing you to the staff members at our wineries continues with Franklin Hill Vineyards Winemaker Bonnie Pysher:

Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

Franklin Hill Vineyards for 34 years. I started the harvest of 1982 and the winery opened at Christmas 1982. Most visitors ask me how I got into winemaking. I tell them I had twins and they look baffled. That is actually how I got into making wine. I had 3-year-old twins when I started working at FHV in 1982. Elaine asked me to come help her label wine for Christmas and my response was "Oh to be able to talk to some adults would be great!” The rest is history. Now my twins are grown and I have four grandsons.

What is your favorite wine that your winery makes, and why? What do you like to pair it with?

That is a tough question. Fainting Goat which is black cherry and I pair it with Coke or Pepsi and lots of crushed ice. It tastes like adult Dr Pepper Black Cherry. Or our Crush which is Pomegranate Peach. I mix that with cranberry juice and lots of crushed ice. I pair both of them with "vacation.”

What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

Not so much a question as a statement: "We didn't know you could grow grapes in PA.” My answer to that is that our little spot in PA is just like you would find in Germany. We have very shaley soil, just like Germany.

What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

I love proving to people that you can grow grapes in PA and make good, quality wines here. I like the diversity of all of our wineries. Most of us use the same grapes, but the wines are all different.

What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

Take your time and enjoy our little piece of heaven. I think our area is so beautiful during every season. When visiting Franklin Hill Vineyards, you think you are driving to “no man’s land”, but you just don't know what you will find on your way back along our 1-mile long driveway. I live 2 miles from the winery and my traffic jam in the morning could be a tractor or a flock of turkeys or some deer standing in the lane!

Behind the Vine

Lots of people who come to visit us ask what we do all year while the grapes grow? Vineyards require tons of attention and lots of work year around.

Right now our vines are growing like crazy, thankfully. We have 1, 2 and 3 year old vines that require a lot of training. Grapes would love to grow like a bush so to make them grow tall we have to train them by tying them up the poles and across the poles as they grow.

We're also cluster thinning which means we remove some of the clusters to create space between the other clusters allowing them to grow. This gives us the best fruit possible. All in all this season is going really well for us and 2015 has potential to be another amazing year at FHV.

We will also be offering our pink Berry Rosé Sangria for sale by the glass and will be giving away a fresh-cut flower to the first 50 customers who purchase a bottle of wine.

Chocolate Pairings from Chocolates on Broadway

Simple and sweet, we will be offering dark chocolate covered lady fingers and pretzels from Chocolates on Broadway in Bangor paired with Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin and Papa's Red.  Free with premier tasting.

Girl Scout Cookie Pairings
February 28 and March 1, noon - 6 pm

Girl Scout cookies are delicious and a great way to support the organization's goal to "build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place." We will be offering a few of your favorite cookies to pair with a few of our favorite Tolino Vineyards wine free with the purchase of a premier tasting.

Vino in the Valley
Purchase passports for $35 in our tasting room or online here.

What's your favorite part of your meal? Appetizer, soup, main course or dessert? During Vino in the Valley we will be offering wines paired with four courses of an Italian meal each weekend in March.

We are partnering with J. DeFranco and Daughters catering to offer sample sized portions of ricotta, gorgonzola, honey and apple crostini paired with our 2012 Pinot Grigio on March 7 and 8. March 14 and 15 we will be offering red pasta fagioli soup with our 2012 Papa's Red followed by chicken tetrazzini paired with our 2013 Vidal Blanc on the 21 and 22. Finally, on the last weekend we will be offering decadent dark chocolate cherry biscotti paired with 2013 Cabernet Franc.

To celebrate the last official month of winter, we are starting to "think spring." A make-your-own sangria bar will be available in our tank room. You choose the fruit and we pour the wine. Each Saturday during Vino in the Valley we will have live music from 1-3 p.m. that will highlight artists who will be part of our summer music series starting in May and running through October.  What could be better than local musicians and local wine?
