Open House Concert Series, Case Club Member Event, and Syrah on Sale at Pinnacle Ridge this month
Syrah on sale
Our 2013 Syrah is marked down to $13.99. Taste this zesty, peppery red - it pairs beautifully with cheese, mushrooms, and lamb.
We took home more medals!
This May marked the 77th year of the Los Angeles International Wine Competition - a world-famous event where almost 100 wine writers, viticulturists, sommeliers, and educators come together to sample and critique a wide array of wines.
The competition spans several continents, and welcomes vintages from such famous wine regions as Australia, France, Germany, and Argentina. All entries are blind-tasted, each glass marked only with a number. This is to ensure that the judges are completely objective in their assessments.
This year, Pinnacle Ridge is proud to announce that of the five wines we sent to LA, all of them returned with awards. We received two Gold Medal wins: Cuvee Chardonnay (93/100 points), and Late Harvest Vidal Blanc (90/100 points). The other three wines all garnered silver medals: the Sparkling Brut Rose and Blanc de Blanc, as well as the Chambourcin Rose.
This continues our streak of medalling every wine that we have sent out so far in 2016. First we swept the PA Farm Show, then the Finger Lakes Wine Competition, and now Los Angeles.
Case Club Event: Think Pink! "Rosés from around the world"
July 10 - 3 pm
Join winemaker Brad as he takes you on a tour of a style of winemaking known as rosé. While rosés might be similar in color, they offer a world of varieties in texture, mouthfeel, flavor profile, and body. Case Club members are welcome to bring up to 3 guests! (Please present your card at the door.) Reservations required: 610-756-4481 or pinnacle_ridge_winery@yahoo.com

We are also very proud to announce that our 2013 Dry Vidal Blanc won Gold Medal honors and that our 2013 Late Harvest Vidal Blanc was awarded a Best of Class Gold Medal and a 92 point rating.

Join us on Sunday, April 13 or April 27 for a very special event. Beginning at 5 p.m. come into the tasting room and take a trip to the cellar with our owner/winemaker, Brad Knapp. This event is complimentary for Case Club Members and will be a special tasting to showcase some of the potential in our cellar. We hope to give you an idea of how our wines are progressing and share with you some information about the winemaking process and all that goes into this labor of love. The Philadelphia Inquirer comes to Pinnacle Ridge!
On a recent snow-covered day, we were very fortunate and pleased to welcome a group of experienced tasters, including Mr. Craig LaBan. LaBan is an esteemed food and wine critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and this trip was his first to the Lehigh Valley in the pursuit of tasting local wine. The trip was inspired by Mr. Clark Smith, a highly regarded winemaker, consultant and professor, whose claim that "They [wineries in the Lehigh Valley] make some of the best aromatic white wines in America" pushed LaBan to investigate further. Mr. Mark Chien, the Penn State Extension viticulture educator, joined the pair.
We had a wonderful time pouring for these gentleman while discussing all aspects of wine: regions, terroir, grape varieties, blends... you name it! In an article that Mr. LaBan wrote about his experience, he had very kind things to say about our wines. He described the new 2013 Dry Riesling as a "whip-crack dry Riesling" and remarked that the new 2013 Oasis was a "terrifically quenching French-style rosé.” Read the article here.
Everyday Oenophile: A Winemaker Uncorked
In this edition we are stepping out of the cellar and back into our past. Specifically, we will be discussing a little bit of the history of the land that makes our estate vineyard a Berks County Historic Site. The property located in Greenwich Township on old Rt. 22 is steeped in local history. We can trace back the ownership of the land to the Hensley family, who owned the property in 1758. The property, which was then called "Salvador,” would later shift hands to the Laib family in 1788 for the price of 43 pounds and 19 shillings (less than $73 today).
Over time, the property was portioned off and sold or donated as designated school and church lands, particularly for the Lutheran Congregation of Greenwich. Eventually, the property became Abraham Leichty's, and he sold it to the Rabenhold (or Rabenold - some members of the family dropped the 'h' from the spelling) family. At this point, the property was in substantial disrepair and required many improvements. In addition to improving many of the surrounding structures on the property, in 1851 the Rabenhold family built the barn where the winery stands today. The property remained in the Rabenhold family until World War I.
In 1914, Morris Schucker purchased the property from Louisa Rabenhold for $11,000. The property remained in the Schucker family until the fall of 1990, when Brad Knapp purchased it with the intent of starting a winery. The property had ample land (roughly six acres at this point) that could be used for an estate vineyard, as well as buildings that could be repurposed for winemaking and storage. Brad converted what was previously a potato cellar into a room dedicated to making sparkling wines, and he gradually expanded the tasting room by adding a second and third bar, as well as a cold room in the cellar.
Pinnacle Ridge Winery opened to the public in 1995 and has been welcoming wine drinkers ever since. The estate vineyard is three acres under vine and features Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Chambourcin and Cabernet Franc. The Kempton vineyard site is up to roughly 19 acres, with an additional three acres of vineyard located on property belonging to Dean Scott.

Ice wine returns to Galen Glen later this month
Ice wine time
While many have complained about the bitter-cold winter, remember every cloud has a silver lining. Or in our case a liquid gold lining. These cold nights allowed us to again produce an ice wine. Sarah has just returned from Germany where she was told the wine is perfect. On Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30 you will have the opportunity to sip perfection. Join us for a complimentary pairing of our Ice Wine with a Riesling bread pudding with Ice Wine cream topping.
Visitors from near and far
On Monday, February 17 Galen Glen hosted some special guests for a tasting. Mark Chien, Penn State University Vitaculturalist; an admired wine expert from California, Clark Smith, of Appellation America who enjoys writing, teaching and singing about wine (we were serenaded that day); and Craig LaBan, restaurant critic and drink columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. It was a honor to share our wines and their company. Be sure to read Craig's newspaper article.
Important Case Club updates
Thank you to everyone who came in to renew their annual case club membership during February. We trust you are enjoying the benefits of membership. Please mark your calendar for Friday, June 13 and Saturday, August 2 when we will host our exclusive Case Club events. We have not yet scheduled any winemakers dinners. However, as soon as we do, all 5,000 active Case Club members will be the first to learn of the dates, times and locations. That's right, locations. The new year is bringing some exciting changes to our winemaker's dinners. Not a member of the case club? Here's some info on it.
New vintages and upcoming events
March is a very exciting time in the tasting room as we debut many new vintages. Keep watching your email, inbox "like" us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter for updates on our new vintages that will soon be available for tasting.
2014 is a very exciting year full of fun events and opportunities to taste new wines, enjoy some time in the vineyard on a tour, and make new friends. Check out our calendar of events and plan to join us.
We invite you to be our guest and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the vineyard. We believe wine should be tasted where it's grown, with those involved in nurturing it from the soil to the glass. All wine to be enjoyed on our property is sold by-the-glass only. We require reservations for groups larger than five people. Reservations may be made by calling the winery at 570-386-3682. Please plan early as our reservation openings fill quickly for weekend dates.

Pinnacle Ridge announces January events for Case Club members
We have some very exciting things planned for the 2014 season. We will be kicking off the 2014 event calendar this month with a special event just for our Case Club Members. Join us in the evenings the last Wednesdays (January 21 and 28) and Thursdays (January 22 and 29) of the month for complimentary food and wine pairings featuring some of the newest additions to our tasting line up.
Come out for some great food, some new and exciting wines and a chance to mingle with our staff and your fellow Case Club Members. The event will take place from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Be rewarded with special discounts, Case Club Member news, and updates about new wine releases. Reservations are required - please call 610-756-4481.
We are running low on the ever-popular 2010 Veritas, a classic Bordeaux-style blend that we only make in the best years and age in the finest oak. This vintage will be the last one available until at least 2015. The special evenings reserved in January for our Case Club Members would be a great time to stock up before it's gone.
We have already released some wines from this past year’s harvest: our 2013 Dry Riesling and our 2013 Oasis style rosé wine inspired by old world techniques with a slight pink and orange hue that displays fresh, floral aromas and crisp acidity balanced by notes of citrus fruits. We have also just released our new 2012 Chambourcin, a dry, but fruit forward red, aged in Pennsylvania oak, that possesses an intense note of crushed berries and hints of vanilla. Also, after a few months without our popular sparkling wines, the Brut Rosé returns to the line up.
"Everyday Oenophile - A Winemaker Uncorked"
In this inaugural edition of the "Everyday Oenophile - A Winemaker Uncorked", we will be discussing some of the things that are going on currently at Pinnacle Ridge Winery, as well as the story of how the business began with winery owner/operator and winemaker Brad Knapp.
Brad is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He completed his undergraduate degree at Purdue University (the Cradle of Quarterbacks, for you football fans this playoff season) and received his PhD. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, during which he began developing an interest in the study of wine tasting. Brad possesses a strong and long history of wine tasting and appreciation with other wine enthusiasts. During his academic career, Brad began to experiment with amateur winemaking and brewing. After completing his education, he began looking for work here on the East Coast and spent much of his time on the road investigating the local wine scene.
In 1988, Brad took a position with Air Products and quickly joined some of the local American Wine Society tasting groups in the Lehigh Valley. He is still involved in some of those regular tasting groups today. That same year, he made a Chambourcin blend that won "Best in Show" in a local amateur winemaking competition and, shortly thereafter, he began looking for land with the intent of starting a winery.
In 1990, he purchased the property where Pinnacle Ridge is currently located and began preparing the property for production and planting. He had also developed a relationship with friend and co-worker, the late Curtis Luckenbill, owner of Round Ridge Farms in Kempton, Pa. Curtis had also expressed interest in grape production and the two began planting on the Kempton property in 1991 with Vidal Blanc and Cayuga. Soon, they would add Chambourcin, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to the vineyard. Pinnacle Ridge was licensed in 1993 and opened to the public in 1995 with only three wines.
Today, Pinnacle Ridge Winery produces around 4,500 cases annually and has an extremely diverse portfolio of wines. The list today includes both red and white, dry and sweet, as well as some signature sparkling wines. In recent years, Brad has adopted some new winemaking techniques derived from regions like Germany and Austria, like flotation and hyper oxidation, as methods of removing bitterness and pheonolics from the whites. As a result, the whites age better and remain clear with nice color and are more aromatic.
This past harvest season was one of the most unique in recent memory, as our normally hot, dry summers were instead filled with an abundance of rain. Conversely, the normally wet fall season, as a result of hurricanes moving up the coast, actually saved the harvest with very dry weather and lots of sunshine. We were "saved by the fall," as Brad puts it as this unique weather for the harvest season elevated what would have otherwise been an average vintage. This enabled us to let a lot of our fruit hang much longer. In fact, we hung the Riesling longer than ever this year and this vintage looks to potentially be some of the nicest fruit for whites that we have ever had. We were also able to let some of the Vidal Blanc hang until December 10 and picked that fruit for what will become our first Late Harvest wine since the 2010 vintage. As for the reds, they're "pretty frickin' nice too" according to Brad.

WINE FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The winter holidays are a time of year when folks get a little more creative with their wine choices. At Pinnacle Ridge we have several wines that you might want to consider for your holiday celebrations. Our Brut Rosé or Blanc de Blanc sparkling wines are a great choice to have with appetizers before a special
meal. If you are having a casual gathering with munchies, these wines will add a special elegance to the occasion.
But don’t wait to long to pick up your bubbly as we may sell out near the end of December. Another specialty wine to consider for that special meal is our 2010 Late Harvest Vidal Blanc. This is a classic dessert wine that pairs beautifully with fruit desserts, crème brulee, or cheesecake. Your guests will be impressed.
