Wine & Cheesecake for a Cure at Galen Glen Winery

Winery Hosts Eighth Annual Event to Benefit The American Cancer Society

On Saturday, April 29 from noon to 4 pm, Dr. Rosalee Rehrig and her Relay for Life Team will partner with the staff at Galen Glen Winery in Andreas for their eighth annual Cheesecake for a Cure event to benefit The American Cancer Society. Guests to the winery can purchase slices of homemade cheese cake to pair with a glass of wine while they drink in the beauty of the vineyard. All proceeds from cheesecake sales are donated.

In addition, the winery is donating one dollar from every bottle sold during the event. Galen Glen's winemaker, Sarah C. Rhodes-Troxell states, "Cancer strikes without discern across all races and creeds. Everyone knows someone who has or had cancer. Galen Glen is proud to partner with The American Cancer Society and support the scientists who search for a cure."

When asked why she started this event, Dr. Rosalee Rehrig stated, "As a doctor, I see patients with cancer every day. I've lost a good friend to cancer and I hope for a future where I never have to say, 'you have cancer.'" She continues highlighting, "our friend Sandy is our inspiration. She was a great friend who passed within months of learning she had a brain tumor. If there were more treatments, maybe she could have been saved." Rhodes-Troxell and Rehrig encourage all to visit the winery during the event.

The event is held rain or shine and no reservations are required. Rehrig adds, "a piece of cheesecake and a glass of wine are the perfect way to enjoy any day." Tasting Room Manager, Kathy Matson, quips, "It's just what the doctor ordered. This year, cancer has impacted several members of our winery family in some way. A member of my family is fighting now. I pray for a cure." When asked why this event has continued for eight years, Rehrig notes, "the success of this event year after year has helped us raise tens of thousands of dollars to help others. We are thankful for the support of the winery and it's guests."

Get to know... Tina Keller of Galen Glen Winery

1.     Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

I have worked at Galen Glen Winery for the past three years.

2.     What is your favorite wine that your winery makes, and why? What do you like to pair it with?

My favorite wine is our Fossil Riesling. All of our Riesling wines are special to me because once you help with the harvest and see the amount of grapes to be picked and hand selected to create this wine, you gain a whole new appreciation for the wine. It is amazing to witness. A lot of hard work and dedication goes into making quality wine. Anyone that knows me knows I HATE to cook. When I sip Fossil Riesling I'm inspired to cook....but I don't. That's Karen's job. She feeds our staff well, even if it is just vegetables.

3.     What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

The biggest question I get asked is, "What is your favorite wine?" Usually I respond, "honestly, it depends on my mood. I love our wine so its hard to pick a favorite."

4.     What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

What I love most about local wines, especially wines on the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail is that you are tasting everything this area has to offer. One thing that I have noticed about our wines in particular is that you can almost taste the weather from vintage to vintage. Was it cooler or warmer, wet or dry? All these things are part of that amazing experience of drinking local wines.

5.     What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

One piece of advice I offer to wine lovers that travel the trail is to keep an open mind. When tasting, try something new or something you didn't like before, you may be pleasantly surprised. Also bring a big vehicle because if you find a wine you love you should buy it in bulk. I consider wine a necessity like paper towels. It's better to have too much than none at all!

Get to know... Karen George of Galen Glen

1. Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

I’ve worked for Galen Glen for at least 15 years.

2. What is your favorite wine that your winery makes, and why? What do you like to pair it with?

That changes from year to year, season to season, day to day. My fave at the moment is Gruner Veltliner.  Or is it Gewurztraminer?  I just made one of my specialties the other night, smoked salmon pasta with GV. If I am heading out for Mexican or sushi, I choose  my best friend Gewurz.

3. What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

How do I get your job? I am actually related to Galen, so I was coerced into working here! I have a very stressful real job, so this is my "fun" job. You meet the sweetest, sincerest, silliest people on the wine bar.

4. What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

I think it is great that we are so lucky to have vineyards in our backyards. I am ALL about being sustainable and supporting local agriculture. It has also been great watching them grow. Look out Finger Lakes: PA is coming to get you! I have many people tell me they no longer travel to the Finger Lakes for wine. The wine here is better and they can save on drive time and drink local wine instead.

5. What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

I always advise them to try the vineyard’s specialty, what they are best known for. I also advise trying something outside their comfort zone, outside the box. If you ONLY drink red, try a new white that you are unfamiliar with. You just might like it! If you ONLY drink sweet wines, try a bit drier wine since your palate might be maturing or changing.

7th Annual Cheesecake for a Cure at Galen Glen happening in April

Galen Glen Winery Teams with Local Relay Team to Raise Money for The American Cancer Society

On Saturday, April 16, Dr. Rosalee Rehrig and her Relay for Life Team will join with the staff at Galen Glen Winery on their 7th Annual Cheesecake for a Cure fundraiser for The American Cancer Society. From noon to 4 pm, the team will sell slices of homemade cheesecake.

When asked about her team's goals Dr. Rehrig said, "This year we have set a goal of $15,000. We raise funds for the American Cancer Society because they are dedicated to funding research and finding new treatments and a cure for cancer. Last year, the success of this event blew our team away!"

Sarah Troxell, winemaker, added, "Cancer strikes without discern across all races and creeds, and everyone knows someone who has had cancer or has been impacted by it. Galen Glen is proud to partner with The American Cancer Society and support the scientists who search for a cure by donating $1 per bottle of wine sold during this event."

Dr. Rehrig added, "As a doctor, I see patients with cancer every day. I've lost a good friend to cancer and I hope for a future where I never have to say, 'you have cancer.'" When asked about her favorite cheesecake, Dr. Rehrig responded, "Banana Cream, but then who can resist the Peanut Butter Cup with a glass of Winter Mountain Red?"

Rehrig is so proud of her relay team and their dedication to raise funds to end cancer. She states their inspiration is, "our friend Sandy. She was a great friend who passed within months of learning she had a brain tumor called Glioblastoma. If there were more treatments, maybe she could have been saved."

Tasting Room Manager Kathy Matson adds, "This year, cancer has impacted almost every member of our winery family in some way, through friends and relatives. This year we are even more driven to help raise funds for The American Cancer Society to end this insidious disease."

The event is open to the public and no reservations are required.

Get to know... Kathy Matson of Galen Glen Winery

We're excited to begin a new occasional blog series introducing you to the many staff members at our wineries.

We're kicking it off with Kathy Matson, Tasting Room Manager, at Galen Glen Winery in Andreas.

1.     Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

Galen Glen Winery. About five years total, almost three years full time.  I was a long-time customer desiring Karen's job before that.

2.     What is your favorite wine that your winery makes, and why? What do you like to pair it with?

That's like asking me which of my children is the favorite; I know the answer, but telling might be hurtful to the other! It's a toss up between Gruner Veltliner and Gewurztraminer. Gewurztraminer is what made me a "regular" at the winery as I love Asian and Indian BYO restaurants in the Valley. Gruner is amazing with asparagus and I could eat asparagus every day, so Gruner would be my "every day" wine.

3.     What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

After "what's your favorite wine?" it would be, "Where else can I get your wine?" Since we are not in the PA state stores, I mention they can enjoy our wines at over 60 restaurants in PA and surrounding areas and that we are the only PA wine on the menu at Wegman's Pub in Allentown. I then tell them how I no longer have cart rage when shopping now that I can have a glass of wine and a yummy meal first.

4.     What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

I like living in an AVA (American Viticultural Area). That's amazing to me.  I don't need to board a plane or take a long car ride to visit an AVA. It's right here... pretty impressive!

5.     What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

My advice is do your research. When you plan to visit a winery, check out their website. See what they offer, what wines they grow and produce, their upcoming events, and more. Also, I'd recommend two other things: Leave your cologne and perfume at home. They affect your ability to truly smell wine aromatics and taste effectively. The other thing would be don't wear white - it can unnerve the best server - plus if you are anything like me, a splash of red wine or food is sure to find its way onto your outfit by the end of the day.

Galen Glen customers invited to "Max the Mini" and "Burst the Beemer" at annual fundraising event for local charity

For the second year, the staff at Galen Glen Winery has chosen Family Promise of Carbon County to be the charity they support during their annual harvest fundraiser. "In 2014 we partnered with MINI of Allentown for our Max the Mini event" says Kathy Matson, Tasting Room Manager. "This year, the Daniels family of dealerships wanted to make the event even more fun by adding another car and 'Burst the Beemer' was born."

This year Daniels BMW and MINI of Allentown will have two cars onsite at the winery on Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1 for visitors to bring much-needed items for the only homeless shelter in the area that helps homeless families with children stay together. The two dealerships are asking their clients to make it a competition to see which car gets filled faster, fuller, etc.

The dealership, in Allentown, organized a "rally" for the mini owners last year to arrive together and present their donations. They hope to organize MINI and BMW owners this year. The public is invited to come out and fill their favorite car with the needed donations of: toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectant wipes, hand soap, laundry soap, fabric softener, cleaning products, trash bags, diapers, baby wipes, deodorant, disposable razors as well as washcloths, bath towels, and new socks and underwear for men, women and children of all sizes. They will also be collecting monetary donations. Galen Glen will be offering a Halloween treat for every household who brings a donation.

Family Promise of Carbon County is based in Lehighton and allows homeless families to stay together. Unlike most shelters where women and children are separated from male family members, this program allows families to live together in the day center where thy learn new skills to find better jobs, make good nutrition and life choices. Then in the evenings they stay in host churches where they have their own bedrooms. The average length of stay in the program is 72.4 days and it is a sober-program, where all teens and adults submit to drug testing.

Since January 2015, 17 families, including 18 children under the age of 18, and 15 children under the age of 5 have graduated from the program. The program operates on donations and welcomes the community to get involved. For more information on this program, visit the Family Promise of Carbon County website: www.familypromiseofcarboncounty.com.

Taste the Grape, Taste the Wine this weekend at Galen Glen

It's harvest time. Have you ever thought about the grapes that make your favorite wines? Join us this weekend for a unique opportunity to taste a grape varietal being harvested this week along with the last vintage of the wine made from that grape.

Weekends during the harvest season, Galen Glen Winery is offering a unique tasting experience for their visitors.  On Saturdays and Sundays in late-September and early-October, the winery is inviting customers to "Taste the Grape, Taste the Wine" by sharing the fruits of their harvest with winery visitors.

Tasting Room Manager Kathy Matson notes, "often when drinking wine one does not think about the actual grape varietal that makes the wine. Not only are we giving our visitors the opportunity to think about the grapes, but we are offering the grape as part of the tasting."

Each weekend during harvest, the winery will offer a sample grape of the varietals being harvested that week along with a complimentary taste of the wine that is produced from that varietal.

Tour Time

Join us Saturday and Sunday at 3 pm for a guided walking tour of the vineyard. Walking tours are about one hour and one mile in length. You will meander through the vines, to our crush pad and wine cellar and then return to the tasting room. Tours are complimentary and reservations are not required.  We do suggest sturdy footwear.  Tours are given weather permitting. Tours are complimentary, and no reservations are required.

Future tour dates -  October 3 & 4 and 10 & 11

Galen Glen Winery Named "Best Pennsylvania Winery" in New York International Wine Competition

In late May Galen Glen Winery participated in the Fifth Annual New York International Wine Competition in Manhattan. This competition is unique as it is the first major international competition comprised of "trade only" judges. These judges are distributers, importers, restaurant owners, hotel beverage managers, buyers for major chain stores and sommeliers. This competition boasts that unlike the judges in other competitions, these judges have an impact on purchasing and sales of the award-winning wines, noting that only 30 percent of all wines entered receive recognition or a medal.

One other way that this competition is unlike others is that the wines are judged in category of price, versus varietal in other competitions. They are categorized by under $20, $20-$40 or over $40.  This method of categorizing is used because most consumers make their buying decisions based on price. Galen Glen Winery was recognized as "Best Pennsylvania Winery."

The winery also received two silver medals. The NYIWC states that a silver medal means the judges found the wine "exceptional." The award winning wines were the 2014 Grüner Veltliner and the 2014 Semi-dry Riesling. The winery's staff is honored that Galen Troxell, winegrower and Sarah Troxell, winemaker are continually recognized as leaders in producing aromatic white wines.

The Troxells are known for farming grapes. About 90 percent of all grapes used in Galen Glen's wines are farmed on their family's historic farm, which is rare in Pennsylvania. They have been pioneers in the field for planting of Austrian varietals like Zweigelt and they began growing Grüner Veltliner in 2003 obtaining many other international awards.

In May, they won Double Gold, Chairman's Award and Best in Class at the Riverside International Competition in California.  Two of the winery's Gruner Veltliner wines will represent the US this fall in the invitational Six Nations Wine Competition in Australia too. When asked about the many recent awards, Sarah Troxell remains humble, crediting her team. She is no stranger to awards and honors, having been named "Best Woman Winemaker" in 2014's International Women's Wine Competition in California.

Galen Glen Winery is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Andreas, Pa. and was the only winery listed by Zagat in the "Top Ten Reasons to Drive to the Lehigh Valley." The vineyard is on the family's double-century farm and is full of history.

The tasting room's knowledgeable and engaging staff always make your visit enjoyable. They are open year round. The tasting room hours are Wednesday through Friday, noon to 5 pm, Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. Plan to spend some time drinking in their exceptional views and award-winning wines with some locally-made cheeses or bring your own snacks.

Galen Glen Winery was awarded a Double Gold, Chairman's Award (a unanimous gold vote) and Best In Class for the 2014 Stone Cellar Reserve Grüner Veltliner at the Riverside International Wine Competition in California in May. For over 30 years this competition has been providing consumers and the wine industry with important information from blind tastings by professional wine evaluators. In addition to the medals above, the 2013 Stone Cellar Riesling won Silver, and the Stone Cellar Grüner Veltliner won Silver.

The Troxells are known for farming wine. About 90 percent of all grapes used in Galen Glen's wines are farmed on their family's historic farm. This is rare in Pennsylvania. They have been pioneers in the field for planting of Austrian varietals like Zweigelt and they began growing Grüner Veltliner in 2003 obtaining many other national awards, Philadelphia Inquirer reviews and two opportunities (2013 and upcoming 2015) to represent the United States in the by invitation-only Six Nations Wine Competition in Australia.

When asked about winning, Sarah Troxell, Winemaker responded, "Awards from one of the most esteemed competitions in the US are thrilling. Best in Class and Double Gold for our 2014 Stone Cellar Gruner Veltliner, recognizes the talent required to operate a farm winery in cool climate viticulture."

Galen Glen Winery Again Invited to Represent the United States
in a Prestigious Invitation-Only International Wine Competition

For the second time, Galen Glen has been invited to participate in The Six Nations Wine Challenge. Six Nations is like the Olympics of wine, with only 100 wines representing each of the six nations participating in the competition in Australia. The countries involved are Australia, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, New Zealand and the United States of America. Six Nations was founded as Tri-Nations in 2003. The original countries were Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In 2010 Chile and Argentina were added. 2013 was the first year that the United States of America was included and Galen Glen was invited to represent the US that inaugural year. This is recognized as the only competition in the world where the entrants come from an invitation by the judge of each nation.

Wine Education - Wine Myths and Misconceptions
Sunday, May 3 at 1 pm

$10 per person - Make your reservations now

Join us on Sunday, May 3rd at 1pm for a wine education event. Wine broker, Mike Schiffman, has designed this class to help you approach wine with a spirit of adventure, rather than fear of the unfamiliar. Mike has found that wine appreciation is much more than knowing geography, grape varietals, appellations, and thinking that the more expensive the bottle, the better the wine. As he says, "without the tasting experience, all the information or knowledge in the world is simply useless." This is sure to be an entertaining and educational tasting experience as you will taste wines from Pennsylvania and Austria.

Seating is limited. Reservations are required. Payment of $10 per person requested at time of reservation.

Call the tasting room at (570) 386-3682 during normal business hours to secure your place for this event. Our last wine education class was a sell-out.
