In late May Galen Glen Winery participated in the Fifth Annual New York International Wine Competition in Manhattan. This competition is unique as it is the first major international competition comprised of "trade only" judges. These judges are distributers, importers, restaurant owners, hotel beverage managers, buyers for major chain stores and sommeliers. This competition boasts that unlike the judges in other competitions, these judges have an impact on purchasing and sales of the award-winning wines, noting that only 30 percent of all wines entered receive recognition or a medal.
One other way that this competition is unlike others is that the wines are judged in category of price, versus varietal in other competitions. They are categorized by under $20, $20-$40 or over $40. This method of categorizing is used because most consumers make their buying decisions based on price. Galen Glen Winery was recognized as "Best Pennsylvania Winery."
The winery also received two silver medals. The NYIWC states that a silver medal means the judges found the wine "exceptional." The award winning wines were the 2014 Grüner Veltliner and the 2014 Semi-dry Riesling. The winery's staff is honored that Galen Troxell, winegrower and Sarah Troxell, winemaker are continually recognized as leaders in producing aromatic white wines.
The Troxells are known for farming grapes. About 90 percent of all grapes used in Galen Glen's wines are farmed on their family's historic farm, which is rare in Pennsylvania. They have been pioneers in the field for planting of Austrian varietals like Zweigelt and they began growing Grüner Veltliner in 2003 obtaining many other international awards.
In May, they won Double Gold, Chairman's Award and Best in Class at the Riverside International Competition in California. Two of the winery's Gruner Veltliner wines will represent the US this fall in the invitational Six Nations Wine Competition in Australia too. When asked about the many recent awards, Sarah Troxell remains humble, crediting her team. She is no stranger to awards and honors, having been named "Best Woman Winemaker" in 2014's International Women's Wine Competition in California.
Galen Glen Winery is located in the beautiful rolling hills of Andreas, Pa. and was the only winery listed by Zagat in the "Top Ten Reasons to Drive to the Lehigh Valley." The vineyard is on the family's double-century farm and is full of history.
The tasting room's knowledgeable and engaging staff always make your visit enjoyable. They are open year round. The tasting room hours are Wednesday through Friday, noon to 5 pm, Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. Plan to spend some time drinking in their exceptional views and award-winning wines with some locally-made cheeses or bring your own snacks.

Franklin Hill celebrates fall with two new awards for Trio!
Celebrate the harvest and our newest award winning wine...TRIO! Winning Double Gold and Best in Class at California's International Woman's Wine Competition. Congratulations Bonnie and Maria!
From our grapes to your glass
The start of October brings us close to the end of harvest here at Franklin Hill Vineyards. Our harvest crew worked rain and shine to get our grapes to Bonnie and Maria so they could start working their magic. Our red grapes are still resting, absorbing all those heart healthy benefits we love so much, and will be pressed in the next few days. All in all, 2012 was a good harvest for us, and for this we are thankful.
Talk about thankful, what a festival season we had. We want to thank everyone, and there were a lot of you, who took the time to come out to support us from Split Rock to Seven Springs. A special shout out to all those who braved the storm at Gettysburg! Our festival crew works hard and had a blast introducing our wines all throughout Pa. Not to say they aren't happy to take a well deserved break from all that travel.
Way to go FHV Festival Crew!
Stop by the vineyard soon and maybe you can catch the last bit of grapes coming in to our winery and eventually, your glass! We look forward to your visit and to showing you how much we love what we do.
Bethlehem Harvest Festival
As always, Bethlehem is planning great things and we are excited to be a part of it! The 7th annual HarvestFest in Downtown Bethlehem is October 13. Main Street, Broad Street and the Sun Inn Courtyard will be the home to all the fall festivities, food, shopping and fun for the whole family. This terrific event will include beer tasting and a wine trail, but get your passports early in the day. They are available for $20 and will sell out quickly. Harvest Fest will also offer soup tastings, music, arts, dessert, food and even grape stomping from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m
