Get to know... Virgil Cardamone from Blue Mountain Vineyards

1. Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

I have had the honor of representing Blue Mountain Vineyards for the last five years. I've been blessed with the opportunity to work alongside Joe, a master of his craft. My passion for this Vineyard has grown beyond a profession and lifestyle - it's become my heart and home.

2. What is your favorite wine that your winery makes, and why? What do you like to pair it with?

Our Petite Syrah and Shiraz are my personal favorites. The characteristic burst of fruit up front and velvety texture make it a perfect pairing with pastas and Italian food.

3. What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

Whenever I'm in the field, customers are always curious about visiting the tasting room. They are always pleased to hear that they can visit our location in New Tripoli seven days a week. I always advise them to book a table for our weekly Sunday Blues Music and other annual events that are a staple at Blue Mountain.

4. What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

I love the familial appeal of this industry. We are not only representing and promoting the craft of winemaking in the Lehigh Valley, but pushing the importance of our local agriculture. These are home-grown, family-owned vineyards that carry years of labor and love in our acres.

5. What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

I always advise that you take advantage of the variety. The beauty of the wine trial, and wine industry in general, is the vast options and ever changing choices for the palate. With nine beautiful wineries, the Lehigh Valley will certainly be a memorable and enjoyable experience for any wine lover.

Get to know... Kat Collins of Blue Mountain Vineyards

1. Which winery do you work for and how long have you worked there?

Blue Mountain Vineyards. I’m the full-time Office Manager/Tasting Room Manager at the main winery in New Tripoli. I like to tell people that I’ve been employed here 3 years, but I’ve been drinking here for years. I was a long-time customer of BMV before working here, and I still am!

2. What is your favorite wine that your winery makes, and what do you like to pair it with?

I’m in love with our dry Riesling. I love to pair it with fresh sushi, Asian food, and Mexican food at local BYO restaurants.

3. What is the most popular question you get asked by visitors about Lehigh Valley wine or wineries, and how do you answer it?

”What is your favorite wine?” is a common question, followed by “Do you ship your wine?” We get many out-of-town visitors and often they have traveled via airplane which doesn’t allow them or makes it difficult to transport wine home.

We can ship wine to almost all of the United States (depending on each State’s laws) with fairly inexpensive shipping fees. They’re thrilled to discover that they can order our wine directly from our website, or contact us directly at the winery to place an order, and have it shipped to their home. Currently, we do not ship overseas unless under special circumstances.

4. What do you like most about local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries?

I love the diversity of the wineries. While we may use some similar grapes, such as Chambourcin, all of our wines are different. You can try a Chambourcin at each winery you visit and every single one will taste different based on the micro-climate, soil, winemaking practices, and more. It’s quite fascinating! Additionally, each winery has its own distinctive wines, personalities, and events so there’s something for everyone.

5. What is the one piece of advice you offer to wine lovers traveling along the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail?

Take the time to get to know the people at the wineries and learn about the wineries. Most wineries in the Lehigh Valley are family-owned and operated and have quite a history to share about the winery. Some, like Blue Mountain Vineyards, have been producing wine for over 30 years in Pennsylvania and have been instrumental in starting the Lehigh Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) and the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail.

Others have made significant achievements in certain types of wines and more. It gives you a deeper appreciation for the high-quality wine produced in Pennsylvania which can compete with some of the best wines in the world.

What's Happening in The Vineyard

Bud break was early this year due to unseasonably warmer weather early spring. The vines will start to flower in a couple of weeks. During the stages of flowering, pollination and fertilization takes place, which results in grapes.

Despite the lack of rain in May, the vines are doing well and it hasn't affected us so far. If it continues, though, it could affect the resulting harvest in the fall.

We've also been hard at work putting tubes on the vines which help protect them, train them to trellis, and encourage faster growth. We've replaced all the Merlot, Vidal, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that we lost during the harsh winter of 2013, as well as adding more vines to increase our production. It will take at least five years to have a full, quality harvest from the new vines.

Build your team with Blue Mountain's new "Wine Blending" event

Blue Mountain's "Wine Blending" event is the perfect team builder for any group that relies on teamwork and communication to be successful. The key to a great blend is balance. Each varietal working together with each other's characteristics and strengths to make an interesting yet unified wine. Most teams work in much the same way, with diverse personalities coming together in a way that will produce the most beneficial results. During our events your team will work together in a fun, relaxed environment that will promote:

- Goal setting
- Role clarification
- Problem solving with a focus on intrapersonal communication
- Environment creation (creating an atmosphere where disagreements or issues are discussed in an open, positive and diplomatic manner.)

It starts with a brief tour of Blue Mountain - from the amazing views, to the tasting room, and of course the tank room, where the magic happens. The team building starts with an understanding of what exactly goes into the process of producing our signature blend, the Blue Heron Meritage.

After tasting each component available, groups of 3-5 are created to work together through discussion, tasting, and compromise to create their own signature blend. Everyone has a different palette so finding the balance that the entire group can agree on requires great communication, teamwork, and patience. We will discuss issues that came up and how each group was able to work through them. Then on to the grand finale. We will do a blind tasting of each blend and decide as a group who created the finest. These blending events provide a fun, new way of integrating your team and giving them tools that they will be sure to bring in to the workplace.

The event features leadership development and team building expert Ken Altenbach, founder of Team Building US.

When: Tuesday April 28 - 9:30 am until approx. 2:30 pm

Where: Blue Mountain Vineyards
7627 Grape Vine Drive
New Tripoli, Pa 18066

Cost: $24.50 per person includes tour, tasting, team building seminar, and a light lunch.

Can you work together to create the next great Blue Mountain wine?

Join Blue Mountain's Dallas Drummond and Team Building US's Ken Altenbach as they create an event that will be talked about in your office for a long time.

This event is geared towards providing you and your employees a new, fun, and relaxed way to improve workplace interactions and develop problem solving skills.

Blue Mountain wines wine more awards; store at Lehigh Valley Mall reopens

Blue Mountain Vineyard Wines Win International Awards!
Eastern International Wine Competition (East Meets West)

For the second year, Vineyard & Winery Management Magazine combined two of its oldest and most established wine competitions into one by creating the International "East Meets West" Wine Challenge.  The judging was held Feb. 10-11, 2015 in Sonoma County, California. A total of 1164 wines were awarded medals.

Since 1982, the West Coast Wine Competition has annually recognized wines produced and bottled in the West. The International Eastern Wine Competition, started in 1975, is one of the oldest and longest-running wine competitions in the nation.

This year, the competitions merged into one large event. Wines were simultaneously judged in two established regional divisions: International Eastern Wine Competition and the West Coast Wine Competition. Traditional awards were given in each division. Best of Show winners moved on to compete in the East Meets West Taste Off to see which wine was best overall. This afforded each entrant two chances to win medals: one in its own division and one in the Taste Off. A Riesling Championship was also held.

There are plenty of activities to take part in or just relax and enjoy this cool, crisp, and beautiful month.

Save the date for Blue Mountain's annual Picking Party and Grape Stomp event

News from the Vineyard

August is a very busy month in the vineyard. We have been hard at work spraying, tying and leaf pulling the vines. Due to the harsh winter and unusually cool spring our vines have suffered. In the spring we planted new vines for future harvests to replace ones that didn't survive the winter. There will definitely be less crop this year, but since there is less crop the quality should be very good.  Hopefully we will have very little crop loss from birds since our vines are netted. Wish us luck!

Blue Mountain Vineyards talks sulfites in wine, farmers' markets and private parties

MORE GRAPES, FEWER SULFITES
You hear about sulfites all the time when it comes to wine. So what does it really mean?

Sulfites are a naturally occurring compound that nature uses to prevent microbial growth. They are found on grapes, onions, garlic, and on many other growing plants.

Winemakers have been adding additional sulfites to wines for millennia. The Greeks and Romans used sulfur candles to sterilize their wine barrels. Sulfur protects damage to the wine caused by oxygen, and again helps prevent organisms from growing in the wine. This allows the wine to last longer too, which lets it age and develop all of those complex flavors we all love and enjoy so much. If you didn't add sulfites, the wine would turn into vinegar in a matter of months or sooner.

We pride ourselves in making wine that is low in sulfites. By not mass producing our wines they are able to be consumed without concern for most people who tend to be sensitive to sulfites. Small amounts of sulfites occur during the fermentation process so even wines labeled no added sulfites or organic contain sulfites.

Join Blue Mountain Vineyards this Saturday evening for the Candlelight Barrel Tasting event

Planting season at Blue Mountain Vineyards
Yes, that's Joe in the vineyard planting a Cabernet vine with his crutches beside him. It's been a long road back since his injury in late December and he is happy to be back in the vineyard working.  Usually the vines make it through the winter because we have grafted vines that our disease resistant and winter hardy. However, due to the harsh winter we are replacing over 2,000 vines.

Candlelight Barrel Tasting event this Saturday
May 31 from 5 - 9 p.m.

Sangria Sundays are back!
The weather is finally getting warmer and we are excited to move our Sunday entertainment to our outdoor deck. Pick one of our delicious wines to make your own Sangria at your table. We always have a wonderful selection on DiBruno Bros. cheeses available and freshly baked bread but feel free to bring your own snacks and share around the table.
